Hesitating to even call it a book, this second published work is more of a 3-dimensional kinetic piece of sculptural literature. If you're familiar with the ancient children's toy known as Jacob's Ladder, then you may get a feel for the structure of Uncommon Time. Consisting of 5 sturdy panels interlinked by hinged straps, it opens from a closed stack to hang vertically and then, by inverting the top panel, a flip flop cascade of each subsequent panel ensues to turn each "page" in-step. Hard to visualize here in 2-dimensions, but each flip of the top panel creates the illusion of a perpetually stepping sequence. No wonder that the Jacob's Ladder was once feared as a mystic's tool. Be assured, our version is pure in virtue, though you may still find yourself entranced. Each side of the individual panels is printed with color and black & white imagery, poised as two sides of the dual worlds inhabited by our inner thoughts and outer experiences. The hinged straps which hold the panels together, yet in cyclic motion, support the pondering text which mirrors this same complex duality. Riveted metal plates clad each panel to further serve both function and form. Uncommon Time must be seen to be experienced, truly poetry in motion.
